A review of gas diffusion layer properties and water management in proton exchange membrane fuel cell system

Paul C. Okonkwo et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the key additives of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) related to water formation and delivery, as well as the material properties that influence GDL and overall PEMFC performance. It also discusses the potential consequences of improperly managed water transport in causing poor fuel cell performance and failure. The paper suggests further experimental and numerical studies to better understand the relationship between fuel cell failure and PEMFC component materials.

Discrete-holes film fueling anode heads for high performance air-breathing microfluidic fuel cell

Xun Zhu et al.

Summary: A novel air-breathing microfluidic fuel cell with discrete-holes film fueling anode was developed in this study, introducing the concept of gas film cooling to enhance fuel transfer efficiency. The visualization and verification of annular film flow based on film fueling were conducted using fluorescence microscopy under various flow conditions. The research results provide valuable insights for promoting the practical application of microfluidic fuel cells.

Summary: By studying the impact of compound drops with varying radius ratios, it has been shown that different modes of regime transition can be achieved under identical inertial conditions. Factors influencing this transition have been discussed, including the interplay of inertia and buoyancy forces.

Droplet dynamic characteristics on PEM fuel cell cathode gas diffusion layer with gradient pore size distribution

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated droplet dynamic characteristics on fuel cell cathode GDL with gradient pore size distribution (GPSD). Results show that droplets have shorter detachment time and smaller detachment radius on superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic GDLs. Large pores can facilitate droplet detachment but also increase droplet detachment radius and pressure drop. Different GPSDs can reduce droplet detachment time and pressure drop.

Numerical investigation of water droplet impact on PEM fuel cell flow channel surface

Yanzhou Qin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of water on the channel surface of PEM fuel cells, considering factors such as impact velocity, droplet size, surface contact angle, temperature, and impact angle. The results showed that these factors influence water spreading and motion modes on the surface, with splashing more likely to occur on wet surfaces during impact.

Numerical investigation of water droplet removal characteristics in novel block channels of PEMFC using dynamic wettability model

Qiaoyu Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of novel channel designs on liquid water removal in PEMFC, compared to traditional straight channels. The one-block channel accelerates water movement but with higher pressure drop, while the separated two-block channel achieves faster water removal and smaller pressure drop through capillary wicking effect.
