Optimisation of high-performance, cobalt-free SrFe1-xMoxO3-δ cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells prepared by spray pyrolysis

Victor Zapata-Ramirez et al.

Summary: Strontium-ferrite-based perovskites have been studied as cobalt-free cathodes for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The experimental results show that the spray-pyrolysed electrodes exhibit lower resistances and smaller grain sizes at 700°C compared to the electrodes synthesized by the Pechini method. Moreover, the spray-pyrolysed electrodes, especially the Mo-doped phase, demonstrate better stability after thermal cycling and ageing tests.

La4Ni3O10±δ-BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-δ cathodes for proton ceramic fuel cells; short-circuiting analysis using BaCe0.9Y0.1O3-δ symmetric cells

Francisco J. A. Loureiro et al.

Summary: Protonic ceramic fuel cells show promise for energy conversion at intermediate temperatures. High order nickelates could be attractive cathode materials due to their high electrical conductivities. Composite cathodes in this study show improved performance, especially in wet O-2 conditions, with the correction of potential measurement biases.

Creating new surface-exchange pathways on the misfit Ca-cobaltite electrode by the addition of an active interlayer

Allan J. M. Araujo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding an active interlayer of Ce0.8Pr0.2O2-delta (CPO, + 2 mol% Co) can improve the electrochemical performance of C349 in solid oxide cells, especially at high temperatures. However, at lower temperatures, the interlayer pathway of CPO + Co may dominate due to its higher ionic conductivity compared to C349.

Summary: This study demonstrates a highly efficient oxygen electrode with strong coherency, high stability, and enhanced electrochemical performance. The phase contiguity and interfacial coherence between NBCCF and GDC in the composite material play a key role in improving the performance of the electrode.

Mixed ionic-electronic conductivity, phase stability and electrochemical activity of Gd-substituted La2NiO4+δ as oxygen electrode material for solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cells

Elena Pikalova et al.

Summary: The Ruddlesden-Popper La2-xGdxNiO4+delta nickelates were synthesized as potential oxygen electrode materials for solid oxide fuel/electrolysis cells. They showed high p-type electronic conductivity between 500-800 degrees C. Substitution by gadolinium did not change the oxygen content in air, but had a negative impact on the mobility of oxygen.

Summary: The composite electrode of misfit calcium cobaltite [Ca2CoO3-delta](0.62)[CoO2] (C349) and Ce0.8Pr0.2O2-delta (CPO) shows high levels of electrochemical performance comparable to the standard La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF), providing insight into critical optimization factors for similar SOC electrodes with low ionic transport.
