Development of high pressure membraneless alkaline electrolyzer

V. V. Solovey et al.

Summary: This article introduces a technology for cyclic generation of hydrogen and oxygen using electrodes made of variable valency material without the need for separating ion-exchange membranes. This technological solution enables the production of high-pressure hydrogen continuously while reducing the energy intensity of production. The article investigates the influence of supplying DC current discretely to the electrolysis cell to improve gas evolution processes and simplify the power systems of the electrolysis plant. Additionally, an electrolysis installation equipped with a thermosorption compressor using LaNi5 as a hydrideforming compound is considered. Comparative characteristics between the developed electrolyzer and currently used hydrogen generators are provided.

High temperature electrolysis using Molten Carbonate Electrolyzer

Linda Barelli et al.

Summary: This study presents a system for hydrogen production based on a Molten Carbonate Electrolyzer, which can generate pure oxygen and hydrogen from water and recover additional gas streams internally. Energy equilibrium and gas mix compositions were analyzed, with current density found to have the highest impact on system equilibrium. Sensitivity studies on current density, utilization factors of steam and CO2 were also conducted, showing the importance of energy balance in the process.

Sustainability of hydrogen refuelling stations for trains using electrolysers

Carlos Funez Guerra et al.

Summary: Hydrogen has the potential to become a powerful energy vector with clean, sustainable, and flexible alternatives in different sectors. The study focuses on performing a techno-economic analysis for hydrogen refuelling stations to supply a fleet of 20 hydrogen-powered trains, showing that using hydrogen as an alternative fuel for trains is a sustainable and profitable solution. The economic analysis concludes that negotiating a lower electricity cost, setting a higher hydrogen selling price, and meeting specific operating hours and system capacity requirements are key factors for a successful implementation.

Electrolyzer modeling and real-time control for optimized production of hydrogen gas?

Benjamin Flamm et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to operate an electrolyzer in a cost-effective manner by solving a model-based optimal control problem. Experimental characterization of the electrolyzer is conducted to formulate nonlinear models and design a real-time optimal controller, then implemented on the actual system. Simulation results show significant cost reduction compared to existing methods, with validation demonstrated in real-time operation.

Analyzing the levelized cost of hydrogen in refueling stations with on-site hydrogen production via water electrolysis in the Italian scenario

M. Minutillo et al.

Summary: The study focused on the techno-economic assessment of on-site hydrogen refueling stations using PV plants integrated with electrolysis units in the Italian scenario. It found that the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is influenced by investment costs, operational and maintenance costs, and electricity prices. The results showed that the LCOH values increase proportionally with changes in electricity mix and hydrogen production capacity.

Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Emulator for Power Electronics Testing Applications

Burin Yodwong et al.

Summary: This article presents a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer emulator using an equivalent electrical scheme, which accurately reproduces the dynamic operation of PEM electrolyzers using supercapacitors. The emulator is validated with a 400-W commercial PEM electrolyzer and is designed to test new DC-DC converters for PEM ELs without risking damage to real electrolyzers for experimental purposes. The proposed approach is applicable for both single cell and stack emulation.
