Summary: PEMFCs have become the most attractive power supply units for both stationary and mobile applications. The gas diffusion layer is critical for the operation and design characteristics of PEMFCs, with the microporous layer considered a key variable for mass transfer. However, there is still a lack of special review to summarize recent progress in MPL materials and design.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are a promising candidate as the next-generation power sources, with gas diffusion layers (GDL) coated with microporous layers (MPL) playing a vital role. Various key aspects in the research and development (R&D) of this fuel cell component are explained in this review, including material characterization, liquid water detection/quantitation, structure reconstruction, fundamental modeling, transport properties, and durability. Major modeling approaches and important material properties influencing two-phase flow and fuel cell performance are discussed and summarized to further advance on the GDL material design and development.

Mechanism and Model for Optimizing Polytetrafluoroethylene Distribution to Improve the Electrical and Thermal Conductivity of Treated Carbon Fiber Paper in Fuel Cells

Summary: Studying the mechanism and prediction model for electrical and thermal conductivity in PTFE-treated CFP is essential for improving the performance output of PEMFCs. By optimizing the PTFE distribution in CFP, the electrical and thermal conductivity of CFP can be effectively increased. A filter net effect mechanism was proposed to explain the influence of PTFE distribution on CFP performance, and contour maps were used to reveal the equivalent effect of multiple factors on conductivity, providing inspiration for reducing electrical and thermal resistance in CFP.
