Phase-field modeling of fracture in heterogeneous materials: jump conditions, convergence and crack propagation

Arne Claus Hansen-Doerr et al.

Summary: This study presents a variational diffuse modeling framework for cracks in heterogeneous media, combining crack kinematics, strain energy split, and relaxation methods to ensure mechanical jump conditions and meaningful crack propagation. The model's effectiveness and reliability are verified through convergence studies and crack branching observations, highlighting the importance of a reasonable homogenization scheme.

A numerical study into element type and mesh resolution for crystal plasticity finite element modeling of explicit grain structures

William G. Feather et al.

Summary: Numerous CPFE simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of element type and mesh resolution on the accuracy of predicted mechanical fields over grain structures, showing that quadratic tetrahedral and linear hexahedral elements are more accurate for CPFE modeling compared to linear tetrahedral and quadratic hexahedral elements. Tetrahedral elements are preferred due to their speed in mesh generation and flexibility in describing complex grain geometries.

A concurrent atomistic-crystal plasticity multiscale model for crack propagation in crystalline metallic materials

Subhendu Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study presents a coupled concurrent atomistic-continuum multiscale model for analyzing crack propagation and associated mechanisms in crystalline metallic materials. By integrating models at atomic and continuum scales, effective continuum-scale constitutive models have been developed and validated for analyzing crack evolution in deforming domains characterized by crystal plasticity.
