Flexure mechanics of nonlocal modified gradient nano-beams

S. Ali Faghidian

Summary: The nonlocal modified gradient theory combines the frameworks of nonlocal integral elasticity and modified strain gradient theory, applied to a beam model. Nanoscopic effects are accommodated, and well-posedness of problems on bounded structural domains is confirmed. Analytical solutions and numerical illustrations are provided for flexural wave behavior in nano-sized beams, and wave propagation in carbon nanotubes is validated through molecular dynamics simulations.

Evaluation of the incremental compliances of non-elliptical contacts by treating them as external cracks

I Sevostianov et al.

Summary: This study examines the incremental normal compliance of an irregular contact between two elastic half spaces, modeling the contact as an external crack. By utilizing an approximate expression for stress intensity factor and Rice's theorem, the crack compliance is evaluated. The results are applicable to a wide range of contact shapes and include the formulation of bounds similar to Hill's comparison theorem. Additionally, the study explores the relationship between elasticity and conductivity in contact conductance.

On the influence of a surface roughness on propagation of anti-plane short-length localized waves in a medium with surface coating

Gennadi Mikhasev et al.

Summary: The study examines the propagation of localized surface waves in the linear Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity framework, taking into account roughness of a free boundary. A boundary-value problem for anti-plane motions with curvilinear boundary and surface stresses is derived, and the form of a localized wave is obtained using asymptotic techniques. The main result presents the dependence of wave amplitude on the roughness magnitude, which has implications for non-destructive evaluation of surface microstructure.

Monte Carlo method with Bezier curves for the complex conductivity of curved CNT-polymer nanocomposites

Chao Fang et al.

Summary: The Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the complex conductivity of nanocomposites with curved carbon nanotubes, showing that both conductivity and dielectric constant decrease significantly with curved CNTs compared to straight-line CNTs, and the percolation threshold increases. Frequency effects of complex conductivity depend on the diameter of CNTs, barrier height, and the complex conductivity of the polymer matrix. Other new features of the theory are also highlighted in the study.

A nonlinear molecular mechanics model for graphene subjected to large in-plane deformations

Matteo Pelliciari et al.

Summary: This paper presents a fully nonlinear stick-and-spring model for graphene subjected to in-plane deformations. It is found that graphene exhibits anisotropy under large deformations and a negative Poisson's ratio after a critical value of deformation. Multiple equilibrium solutions are also found in the case of equibiaxial load, allowing for asymmetric deformations despite symmetric external loads.

On nonlinear dilatational strain gradient elasticity

Victor A. Eremeyev et al.

Summary: Nonlinear dilatational strain gradient elasticity theory examines a specific class of continuum materials where deformation energy is related to the gradients of placement and the determinant of the gradient of placement in an objective manner. This theory is a particular case within the complete Toupin-Mindlin nonlinear strain gradient elasticity, showcasing unique second gradient effects arising from the non-uniform dilatation state of deformable bodies. Dilatational second gradient continua are closely linked to other scalar microstructure models and can be seen as a result of solidification of strain gradient fluids. Through a variational approach, equilibrium conditions for dilatational second gradient continua are derived and analyzed, highlighting their ability to support contact forces on edges and surface curves. Additionally, possibilities for externally applicable double forces and curve forces are explored, with a focus on small deformations and practical applications such as axial deformations and dilatational wave propagation in elastic tubes.

Integral and differential approaches to Eringen's nonlocal elasticity models accounting for boundary effects with applications to beams in bending

Aurora Angela Pisano et al.

Summary: Eringen's fully nonlocal elasticity model leads to ill-posed boundary-value problems and boundary effects, but an enhanced model with a regularizing non-homogeneous local phase provides well-posed boundary-value problems without paradoxes. The enhanced model applied to beam bending is equivalent to a sixth order differential equation with variable coefficients and predicts softening size effects consistently. The influence of the length scale parameter on the beam's response is highlighted, showing a wave pattern in the response function delta(lambda) as the parameter increases.

Contribution of nonlocal integral elasticity to modified strain gradient theory

S. Ali Faghidian

Summary: The nonlocal integral elasticity and the modified strain gradient theory are integrated in the framework of the nonlocal modified gradient theory of elasticity, capturing size-dependent effects in nano-beams. The proposed nonlocal modified gradient problem is well-posed, demonstrated through analytical examination and comparison with molecular dynamics simulation. The stiffening effect of the gradient characteristic parameters is confirmed, providing an effective approach for nanoscopic study of field quantities.
