Upcycling waste tires to affordable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

Gwanwon Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a novel approach to recycle waste tires into oxygen reduction reaction catalysts by utilizing all components, including carbon black, rubber, and iron particles. Thermal oxidation and ammonia gas treatment increased the number of active sites on the catalyst, leading to comparable activity to a Pt/C catalyst. The study demonstrates an effective solution for waste tire management through upcycling pathways.

Electrodeposited bimetallic microporous MnCu oxide electrode as a highly stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Ramesh J. Deokate et al.

Summary: Bimetallic electrocatalysts, particularly Mn1-xCux oxides, have shown great promise in high-performance electrocatalysis due to their synergetic effects and structural modifications. The optimized Mn0.50Cu0.50 catalyst exhibited low overpotential and high stability, making it a strong candidate for oxygen evolution reaction with abundant potential in realistic applications. The enhanced catalytic activity of the Mn0.50Cu0.50 electrocatalyst is attributed to the increased ECSA, formation of porous morphology, and enhanced electronic conductivity.

Mesoporous RhRu Nanosponges with Enhanced Water Dissociation toward Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: Lowering the energy barrier of water dissociation is crucial for efficient hydrogen evolution in alkaline conditions. Mesoporous RhRu nanosponges exhibit enhanced water dissociation behavior and high HER activity in 1.0 M KOH, surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts and comparable to classic Pt/metal (hydro)oxide catalysts. The charge redistribution on RhRu alloy surfaces enables tuning of the Ru d-band center, promoting water molecule adsorption and dissociation, contributing to the remarkable alkaline HER activity on the RhRu catalyst surface.

Concurrent Vacancy and Adatom Defects of Mo1-xNbxSe2 Alloy Nanosheets Enhance Electrochemical Performance of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Ik Seon Kwon et al.

Summary: Alloyed Mo1-xNbxSe2 nanosheets exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction due to increased defect density that promotes H atom adsorption. Calculations suggest that the alloy phase has more defects than individual NbSe2 or MoSe2, with a separated NbSe2 domain at x = 0.5 favoring the formation of Nb/Se vacancies and adatoms in a cooperative manner.

Compressive Strain Reduces the Hydrogen Evolution and Oxidation Reaction Activity of Platinum in Alkaline Solution

Li Jiao et al.

Summary: The study found that applying compressive strain can reduce the Pt-O binding energy of DPtCu3/C, thereby enhancing its oxygen reduction reaction activity and weakening the HER/HOR activity of Pt in alkaline solution. This suggests that the HER/HOR kinetics of Pt in a base is mainly limited by the overly weak Pt-O binding energy.

Electrodeposited NiRh alloy as an efficient low-precious metal catalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction

Dinh Son Tran et al.

Summary: Low-PGM Ni100-xRhx electrocatalysts are fabricated via electrodeposition in this study, with substantial changes observed in morphology and crystalline structure when Ni is alloyed with Rh, resulting in enlarged surface area and development of different textures. The HOR activities of Ni100-xRhx catalysts are dramatically enhanced due to enlarged surface area, bifunctional roles of H-providing sites (Ni/Rh) and OH-providing sites (Ni[OH](2)/Rh2O3), and their balanced composition on the surface. The durability test of Ni89Rh11 catalyst reveals its average decay rate and suggests the practical feasibility of it as a low PGM alkaline HOR catalyst, despite the need for further improvement in durability.
