Wood-Derived Hydrogels as a Platform for Drug-Release Systems

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: Wood-based hydrogels containing cellulose and lignin were successfully developed as drug-release platforms. The viscoelastic and cross-linking properties of precursor solutions were adjusted to create highly porous hydrogel structures through freeze-drying. Variations in the lignin molecular structure significantly influenced the swelling and mechanical performance of the hydrogels, with organosolv-type lignin demonstrating optimal properties for drug release systems.

Nano-Structured Lignin as Green Antioxidant and UV Shielding Ingredient for Sunscreen Applications

Davide Piccinino et al.

Summary: The use of lignin nanoparticles in cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications shows great potential due to their green, biocompatible, and biodegradable properties. Lignin, the most abundant polyphenol in nature, has beneficial physical and chemical properties that can be enhanced for antioxidant and UV shielding activities through structure activity relationships. Advances in the technology for preparing lignin nanoparticles are described to improve their performance in sunscreen and antiaging formulations.

Facile Tailoring of Structures for Controlled Release of Paracetamol from Sustainable Lignin Derived Platforms

Mario Culebras et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized hydrogels using lignin, a non-valorized biopolymer, crosslinked with PEGDGE. The ratio of crosslinker used influenced the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels, with increased crosslinker amount leading to smaller pore size and higher swelling capacity. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a lignin:PEGDGE ratio of 1:1.
