Modeling fluid-structure interaction with the edge-based smoothed finite element method

Tao He

Summary: This work addresses the numerical modeling of fluid-structure interaction using the edge-based smoothed finite element method (ESFEM). The authors prove the flexibility of the smoothed Galerkin weak-form integral in the ESFEM and propose a simple integration scheme to facilitate the approximation. The ESFEM is applied to elastodynamics equation and interface conditions, and can serve as a general solution approach to various FSI examples and other real world phenomena.

Numerical Methods for Viscoelastic Fluid Flows

M. A. Alves et al.

Summary: Complex fluids are engineered for specific applications by adding macromolecules to a solvent, imparting viscoelasticity which affects flow instabilities and fluid dynamics. Recent research focuses on numerical methods for simulating viscoelastic fluid flows, particularly the finite-volume method used to assess performance with benchmark flows. Issues in numerical methods and novel applications of viscoelastic fluids requiring further development are also discussed.

The strain-smoothed 4-node quadrilateral finite element

Chaemin Lee et al.

Summary: The strain-smoothed element (SSE) method has been developed and applied to improve the convergence behavior of finite elements, limited to constant strain elements. In this paper, the SSE method was successfully applied to a 4-node quadrilateral finite element using piecewise linear shape functions, resulting in significantly improved accuracy.

Cell-Based Smoothed Finite-Element Framework for Strongly Coupled Non-Newtonian Fluid-Structure Interaction

Tao He

Summary: The work introduces a cell-based smoothed finite-element method (CS-FEM) for simulating strongly coupled non-Newtonian fluid-structure interactions. The method softens all gradient-related terms and achieves strong coupling between the two physical media via a block Gauss-Seidel iterative procedure.

Coupling edge-based smoothed finite element method with smoothed particle hydrodynamics for fluid structure interaction problems

Ting Long et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a coupling method of ES-FEM and SPH for solving FSI problems, with correction algorithms integrated into the SPH method to improve computational stability and accuracy. The virtual particle coupling scheme was used for implementing the coupling of ES-FEM and SPH, which is found to be effective in simulating FSI problems.

A MITC3+element improved by edge-based smoothed strains for analyses of laminated composite plates using the higher-order shear deformation theory

Thanh Chau-Dinh et al.

Summary: A new three-node triangular plate element is proposed for analyzing laminated composite plates based on the higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The displacement fields and transverse shear strain fields are approximated using linear functions and a cubic supplemented function, originating from the MITC3+ shell finite elements. The performance of the proposed ES-MITC3+ plate elements is validated through numerical examples, showing convergence to exact solutions and agreement with results from other references.
