Oestrogen-mediated upregulation of the Mas receptor contributes to sex differences in acute lung injury and lung vascular barrier regulation

Lasti Erfinanda et al.

Summary: Epidemiological data from the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak suggest sex differences in mortality and vulnerability. Clinical data and murine experiments indicate that females may be better protected from ALI due to enhanced Mas receptor expression and signaling of the Ang(1-7)/Mas axis, possibly mediated by estrogen.

Role of CD44 in increasing the potency of mesenchymal stem cell extracellular vesicles by hyaluronic acid in severe pneumonia

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that pretreatment of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC EV) with high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMW HA) enhanced therapeutic effects in severe bacterial pneumonia by increasing uptake and bacterial phagocytosis of EV by monocytes. This led to a reduction in inflammation and bacterial load in the lungs. HMW HA primed MSC EV significantly increased potency by enhancing EV trafficking to sites of inflammation via the CD44 receptor, associated with increased antimicrobial activity.
