Effect of airflow channel arrangement on the discharge of a composite metal foam-phase change material heat exchanger

Pouyan Talebizadehsardari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different airflow channel arrangements in a storage heater based on copper foam and phase change material, using a representative three-dimensional computer model for evaluation. Increasing the heat exchange surface area by changing the airflow arrangement helped reduce solidification time and improve maximum output air temperature, but led to lower temperature uniformity of the exit air.

Conjugate heat transfer in anisotropic woven metal fiber-phase change material composite

Qinlong Ren et al.

Summary: The study explored the use of high thermal conductive woven metal fibers in phase change materials to improve heat transfer rate. It was found that optimal porosity woven metal fibers can balance heat transfer capability and energy storage capacity. Curved woven metal fibers demonstrated better thermal performance at high porosity, while straight woven metal fibers were more effective at enhancing heat transfer rate at lower porosity levels.

Localized heating element distribution in composite metal foam-phase change material: Fourier's law and creeping flow effects

Pouyan Talebizadeh Sardari et al.

Summary: A numerical parametric study was conducted on a domestic thermal storage heat exchanger with highly localized positive temperature coefficient cylindrical heating elements in a phase change material (PCM) with conductive enhancement by open-pore metal foam. It was found that optimizing the charge time and exit air temperature can be achieved by varying the position, diameter, and temperature of the heating elements. The results indicated that the PCM inside the metal foam mostly follows Fourier's law, while the creeping flow of molten PCM in the pores of the porous medium has a negligible influence on heat transfer.

Numerical study on the performance of shell-and-tube thermal energy storage using multiple PCMs and gradient copper foam

Liang Pu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of multiple phase change materials and gradient copper foam to accelerate the melting of phase change materials and improve heat transfer effectiveness. Results indicate that the utilization of single PCM shows better heat transfer effectiveness compared to radial multiple PCMs. Additionally, the negative gradient type of copper foam offers the best heat transfer effectiveness.

Summary: Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) systems are crucial for the development of energy science and engineering, with efficiency depending on the thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) and heat transfer mechanisms. This review focuses on enhancing heat transfer in LHTES systems through various methods, such as applying nanomaterials additives and using cascaded or encapsulated PCMs. The study also discusses the designs of PCM-based heat exchangers with active and passive heat transfer techniques to improve the efficiency of LHTES systems.
