Isomerization Reactions in Anionic Mesoionic Carbene-Borates and Control of Properties and Reactivities in the Resulting CoII Complexes through Agostic Interactions

Jessica Stubbe et al.

Summary: In this study, anionic borate-based bi-mesoionic carbene compounds of the 1,2,3-triazol-4-ylidene type that undergo C-N isomerization reactions were investigated. It was found that strong agostic interactions with C-H groups of cyclohexyl substituents influenced the coordination geometry of Co-II complexes, resulting in different reactivities towards external substrates. The study also demonstrated the influence of secondary coordination sphere interactions on the structure and properties of these Co-II complexes.

Catalytic Deoxygenation of Nitroarenes Mediated by High-Valent Molybdenum(VI)-NHC Complexes

Shenyu Liu et al.

Summary: The high-valent molybdenum(NHC) complexes show great catalytic potential in the deoxygenation of nitroarenes, with very low catalyst loading. Mechanistic investigations reveal potential active species in the catalytic cycle and the role of spin state in lowering the reaction barrier. Mechanistic details and potential routes for nitroarene reduction facilitation are further evaluated.

Directed Design of a AuI Complex with a Reduced Mesoionic Carbene Radical Ligand: Insights from 1,2,3-Triazolylidene Selenium Adducts and Extensive Electrochemical Investigations

Julia Beerhues et al.

Summary: Extensive electrochemical investigations on 1,2,3-triazolylidene selenium adducts revealed a correlation between their reduction potentials and molecular structures. Unexpected quasi-reversibility was discovered in the reduction of two triazoline selones. Through spectroelectrochemical studies and calculations, the radical anion was successfully assigned to be triazoline centered, providing design principles for stabilizing radicals based on MICs.

Bis(phenolate)-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene complexes of oxo-and imido-vanadium(V)

Lakshmi Suresh et al.

Summary: Based on bis(phenolate)-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, oxo- and imido-vanadium(V) metal complexes were synthesized and structurally identified. The saturated NHC oxo-vanadium complexes were active in the coupling of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide, with the oxo-vanadium complex bearing the less electron-donating benzannulated NHC ligand showing higher activity in CHO conversion to PCHC. The saturated NHC imido-vanadium catalyst exhibited similar activity and selectivity as the analogous oxo-vanadium catalysts due to its reactivity with CO2 via a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction.

Summary: The study found that mesoionic imidazolylidenes bearing a diphenyltriazinyl (Dpt) substituent exhibit improved pi-acidic properties compared to Arduengo-type N-heterocyclic carbenes. This discovery was supported by computational analysis and experimental evidence. The new carbene was utilized to stabilize a low-valent paramagnetic tin compound, demonstrating its usefulness.

Excitation Energy-Dependent Branching Dynamics Determines Photostability of Iron(II)-Mesoionic Carbene Complexes

Shruthi S. Nair et al.

Summary: Recent research has focused on the application of iron-containing photoactive metal complexes as photosensitizers. By using strongly sigma-donating carbene ligands, the excited-state lifetimes of iron complexes can be prolonged. Experimental results show that the excitation wavelength affects the dynamics of the excited states, leading to solvent-dependent photodissociation reactions.

Actinide tetra-N-heterocyclic carbene 'sandwiches'

Joseph F. DeJesus et al.

Summary: Highly symmetrical thorium and uranium octakis-carbene 'sandwich' complexes have been prepared by sandwiching the An(IV) cations between two anionic macrocyclic tetra-NHC ligands of different sizes. X-ray crystallography confirmed that the geometry of the metal center can be determined by the size of the macrocyclic ring, leading to different shapes, while DFT calculations revealed that the NHC ligands predominantly exhibit sigma-donation to the metal without pi-backbonding.

Bright luminescent lithium and magnesium carbene complexes

Piermaria Pinter et al.

Summary: A convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes was reported, along with the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Tri-deprotonated s-block complexes exhibited bright luminescence with a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Quantum-chemical calculations rationalized the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) mechanism between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands.
