Performance of molecular crystals in conversion of light to mechanical work

Jad Mahmoud Halabi et al.

Summary: Dynamic molecular crystals have shown promising potential as energy-transducing materials for actuators, with the ability to substitute micromotor drivers in mechanical positioning and microgripping tasks. Finite element modeling and performance evaluation are essential tools in predicting and optimizing the mechanical response of these materials for soft microrobotics applications.

Nitro-Nitrito Photoisomerization of Cationic Platinum(II) Complexes in the Solid State: Reactivity in Polymorphic Crystals and Glassy State

Ibuki Nakamura et al.

Summary: Nitro-nitrito isomerization, a well-known photoreaction in metal complexes, was studied in different packing environments using a cationic platinum(II) nitrito complex. The polymorphs of the salt exhibited various conversion rates at different temperatures, with the beta-form showing a space group change upon photoirradiation. A salt with the (CF3SO2)(2)N- anion displayed both crystalline and glassy states at low temperatures, with the crystalline state showing around 30% conversion at 100 K. Less densely packed crystals in these salts deteriorated upon photoirradiation.

Understanding of [RuL(ONO)]n plus acting as nitric oxide precursor, a theoretical study of ruthenium complexes of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclo- tetradecane having different substituents: How spin multiplicity influences bond angle and bond lengths (Ru-O-NO) in releasing of NO

Jose Guadalupe Hernandez et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural and electronic properties of ruthenium(II) complexes containing pyridyl, imidazole, and benzimidazole were theoretically analyzed to investigate their role in influencing the release of nitric oxide. The results suggest that the total spin multiplicity of the metal ion is crucial in determining the release of NO, with a decrease in the Ru-O-NO bond angle being a key factor in the release mechanism. The study also observed visible broad bands in the electronic spectra of the complexes, which were consistent with previous experimental results.

Solution and solid-state light-induced transformations in heterometallic vanadium-ruthenium nitrosyl complex

Iakov S. Fomenko et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the preparation and photochemical investigations of a novel binuclear heterometallic complex, which exhibits a bifunctional platform capable of releasing nitric oxide in solution and reversibly switching the NO ligand coordination in the solid state. The presence of vanadium strongly influences the photochemical properties of ruthenium nitrosyl in both solid and solution phases, as confirmed by various analytical techniques.

Photoinduced linkage isomers in a model ruthenium nitrosyl complex: Identification and assignment of vibrational modes

Artem A. Mikhailov et al.

Summary: Photoinduced NO-linkage isomers in a labelled trans-[Ru((NO)-N-14/15)(py(4))F](ClO4)(2) complex were investigated in the solid state using IR-spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The experimental data and calculations allowed for a complete assignment of vibrational bands and provided insights into the structural changes leading to the downshift of certain bands. Long-time irradiation may induce irreversible reactions, such as the release of NO or nitrous oxide N2O.

Mechanophotonics-Mechanical Micromanipulation of Single-Crystals toward Organic Photonic Integrated Circuits

Rajadurai Chandrasekar

Summary: The emergence of molecular crystals as smart nanophotonic components has attracted the attention of scientists, with the development of mechanically flexible crystals requiring challenging micromanipulation methods. The rise of atomic force microscopy has expanded the scope of mechanophotonics and led to the advancement of crystal-based microscale organic photonic integrated circuits. The ability of OPICs to guide, split, couple, and modulate visible electromagnetic radiation using various mechanisms is discussed, with examples from recent literature.

Single-Crystal Optical Actuation Generated by 100% SO2 Linkage Photoisomerization in a Ruthenium-Based Coordination Complex

Jacqueline M. Cole et al.

Summary: Single-crystal optical actuators are a new field of materials chemistry with wide-ranging potential applications, from light-induced molecular motors to photosensing technologies. The type of single-crystal optical actuation observed in a specific compound within this family of complexes depends upon the nature of the ligand that lies trans to the SO2 linkage photoisomer.

Assigning Optical Absorption Transitions with Light-Induced Crystal Structures: Case Study of a Single-Crystal Nanooptomechanical Transducer

Jacqueline M. Cole et al.

Summary: UV/vis absorption spectroscopy provides indirect structural information about the photochemistry and photophysics of molecules by inferring types of electronic transitions from spectral features. Direct structural information could be obtained by mapping light-induced crystal structures against changes in optical absorption spectra. This study reveals the operational mechanism of nanooptomechanical transduction through a combined structural and spectral mapping of solid-state optical absorption.
