On mechanism of lignin decomposition - Investigation using microscale techniques: Py-GC-MS, Py-FT-IR and TGA

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the effect of reaction conditions, particularly the reaction atmosphere type, on the composition of volatiles generated during the pyrolysis of lignin. It was found that processing temperature has a significant impact on the composition changes of volatiles, while the pyrolysis atmosphere has minor qualitative effects but noticeable quantitative differences in their concentration. The complex molecular structure of lignin was confirmed through the identification of phenol derivatives, aliphatic oxygen compounds, and aromatic hydrocarbons as primary and secondary products of lignin decomposition.
