Co-curing of epoxy resins with aminated lignins: insights into the role of lignin homo crosslinking during lignin amination on the elastic properties

Marcus W. Ott et al.

Summary: The flexibility of the amines used for functionalization of lignin plays a predominant role in determining the elasticity of the resulting polymer. More flexible amines lead to increased elasticity, while less flexible amines result in a more rigid resin material. Atomic force microscopy confirmed that the intrinsic elasticities of the lignin domains are the main reason for this observed tendency.

Slow-released bio-organic-chemical fertilizer improved tomato growth: synthesis and pot evaluations

Xinying Wang et al.

Summary: The novel slow-release bio-organic-chemical fertilizer (SBCF) showed higher bacillus activity compared to conventional BCCF. Pot experiments demonstrated that bacillus colonization on tomato roots promoted root growth by secreting auxin and zeatin. Additionally, SBCF treatment significantly increased tomato yields compared to no fertilizer control and BCCF treatments.

Behavior characterization of lignosulfonate depolymerization products under acid-catalyzed conditions using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Fang Hong-Xia et al.

Summary: The study established an improved method for the characterization of real lignin depolymerized products, using the depolymerization solution of commercially available sodium lignosulfonate. This approach enabled the detection of 37 main lignin-based aromatic products. Under optimized mild acid-catalyzed reaction conditions, approximately 25% of lignosulfonate was depolymerized into lignin-derived aromatic products, including potential compounds for new applications.

Acid hydrotropic fractionation of switchgrass at atmospheric pressure using maleic acid in comparison with p-TsOH: Advantages of lignin esterification

Chen Su et al.

Summary: Using maleic acid as an acid hydrotrope in the fractionation of switchgrass showed more rapid and greater dissolution of lignin and hemicelluloses compared to p-toluenesulfonic acid, leading to improved antioxidant ability of the dissolved lignin and enhanced enzymatic digestibility of water-insoluble solids for sugar production. Maleic acid also improved the lubrication effect of lignin, facilitating mechanical fibrillation of cellulose into nanofibrils, while its lower acidity and solubility benefits recycling and sustainability efforts.

Synthesis of High-Density Components of Jet Fuel from Lignin-Derived Aromatics via Alkylation and Subsequent Hydrodeoxygenation

Jing Bai et al.

Summary: High-density polycyclic alkanes prepared from lignocellulose biomass are synthesized using lignin-derived phenol and benzyl acetate, followed by hydrodeoxygenation reaction over a Pd/C catalyst. The HDO products show high density and heating values, with perhydrofluorene and dicyclohexylmethane as dominant components. This strategy provides a potential alternative to fossil fuels.

Microwave-Assisted Sulfonation of Lignin for the Fabrication of a High-Performance Dye Dispersant

Xiao Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that 1,4-butanesultone was the most effective sulfonation reagent for lignin, producing a sulfonated product with high molecular weight and sulfonic group content, enhancing dispersibility and improving dyeing rate. The sulfonation by 1,4-butanesultone can decrease the phenolic hydroxyl content of lignin, preventing the adsorption of the dispersant on fibers and reducing fiber staining during dyeing process.

Improved understanding of technical lignin functionalization through comprehensive structural characterization of fractionated pine kraft lignins modified by the Mannich reaction

Matthew Kollman et al.

Summary: The amino alkylation of kraft lignins using the Mannich reaction is a versatile technique that can be used for analytical derivatization, improving hydrophilicity, or enhancing metal ion adsorptive capacity. This study utilized a quantitative technique combining 2D HSQC NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy to directly examine the structure of aminated lignins. The results indicated that low molecular weight lignins had a higher degree of amine substitution compared to high molecular weight fractions, with no significant impact observed from pH levels or different amine species.
