Evaluation of some traditional medicinal plants: phytochemical profile, antibacterial and antioxidant potentials

Arzu Ucar Turker et al.

Summary: Bioassays were conducted on nine medicinal plants to investigate their antibacterial, antioxidant, and phenolic content. The results showed that Epilobium hirsutum exhibited the best antibacterial activity, while Lythrum salicaria demonstrated strong broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Epilobium angustifolium, Prunella laciniata, and Lythrum salicaria had potent antioxidant activity, and Epilobium hirsutum and Achillea millefolium showed the highest phenolic and flavonoid content. High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis revealed Prunella laciniata and Agrimonia eupatoria as the best sources of rosmarinic acid, while Verbena officinalis and Prunella vulgaris had significant amounts of rutin. This study supports the traditional knowledge of the tested plants and highlights their potential applications in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
