Study on the reactivity of oxygen-containing functional groups in coal with and without adsorbed water in low-temperature oxidation

Zhilin Xi et al.

Summary: The analysis showed that as the relative pressure increases, adsorbed water in coal is sequentially adsorbed at primary sites (44%), secondary sites (34%), forms water clusters (5%), and fills micropores (17%). The energy required to overcome reactions with adsorbed water increases, along with associated heat releases and rate constants. Adsorbed water promotes free radical chain reactions during the low-temperature oxidation of coal.

Long-term effects of CO2-water-coal interactions on structural and mechanical changes of bituminous coal

Guanglei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the long-term effects of CO2 injection on the structural and mechanical properties of water-saturated coal were investigated. It was found that the presence of water during CO2 injection resulted in significant changes in the mechanical properties of coal, primarily due to sorption-induced cracking causing structural damage. The extent of reduction in mechanical properties was less compared to pure CO2 injection, potentially due to the hindrance of CO2 sorption by water.

Adsorption and diffusion characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in micropores and mesopores of bituminous coal: Molecular dynamics

Hang Long et al.

Summary: The research found that with the increase of pore size, the gas loading amount in the pore model increased, but the tight adsorption amount and adsorption heat decreased. The order of CO2 > CH4 > N2 is the arrangement order of tight adsorption amount, loading amount and adsorption heat. The diffusion characteristics of the three gases in the pores are CH4 > N2 > CO2, and larger pores are more conducive to gas diffusion.

Influence of Water on Nitrous Oxide Adsorption and Desorption on Coals

Shilin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of water on the adsorption and desorption of nitrous oxide in coal, revealing that H2O significantly hinders the adsorption and diffusion capability of N2O within coals and enhances the chemical transformation among nitrogen-containing species. The focus of practical N2O geologic sequestration should be on the effects of in-situ H2O within coal reservoirs.
