Knowledge co-production: A pathway to effective fisheries management, conservation, and governance

Steven J. Cooke et al.

Summary: Although scientific research is expected to inform management and policy, there is often a gap between scientific knowledge and its application. Knowledge co-production is seen as a mechanism to bridge this gap, but has yet to be fully embraced in fisheries research. Co-production is an iterative and context-dependent process, with best practices that can facilitate the generation of actionable research through respectful and inclusive partnerships.

From Amazon Catfish to Mekong Money Fish: Size-Based Assessment of Data-Limited Commercial Inland Fisheries

Samuel Shephard et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates and compares size-based indicators and a length-based spawning potential ratio model as tools for assessing data-limited commercial fisheries in inland systems. Case studies from various important fisheries were analyzed to explore the effectiveness of these assessment methods in different inland fisheries contexts.

Introduced alien, range extension or just visiting? Combining citizen science observations and expert knowledge to classify range dynamics of marine fishes

Irene Middleton et al.

Summary: Despite the unprecedented rate of species redistribution during the Anthropocene, there are few monitoring programmes to detect distributional change of marine species. Here, a new approach combining citizen science with expert knowledge is presented to classify out-of-range occurrences for marine fishes. Using decision trees, scoring and matrices, observations are classified and validated, with a demonstration in New Zealand showing that six out of ten species had out-of-range occurrences. Through this method, data deficiencies can be overcome to monitor range dynamics of marine species.

Comparing on-site and off-site survey data to investigate survey biases in recreational fisheries data

Wolf-Christian Lewin et al.

Summary: Recreational fishing data, collected through on-site and off-site surveys, show indications of avidity and recall bias which may influence catch and release estimates. Catch rates and release rates vary significantly between different fishing platforms, with on-site and diary anglers showing similar rates. Complementary on-site surveys should be included in recreational fishing monitoring approaches to control for biases, and future surveys should incorporate variables capturing angler behavior heterogeneity.

Telling the same story: Fishers and landing data reveal changes in fisheries on the Southeastern Brazilian Coast

Carine O. Fogliarini et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of fishing on marine ecosystems requires knowledge of the conserved state of the environments, which can be obtained through historical data and local ecological knowledge. Combining different types of data can reveal trends that may not be apparent when analyzed separately. This study in a Brazilian fishing village found that experienced fishers were more aware of overexploited and new target species, with a shift in target species due to the decline in mesopredators populations. Temporal changes in landings and trophic level metrics aligned with previous reports on overexploitation in the area.

The value and limitations of local ecological knowledge: Longitudinal and retrospective assessment of flagship species in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

Brooke L. Bessesen et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activities and climate change impact marine ecosystems globally, and local ecological knowledge (LEK) can complement biomonitoring for assessing conservation status. Interview data from fishermen and tour guides in Costa Rica indicate shifts in abundance of flagship species, though challenges exist in assessing perceptions of change over time. LEK can provide valuable information for current assessments but may require multiple data points and systematic evaluation for accurate trend analysis.
