Taking an antiracist posture in scientific publications in human genetics and genomics

Kyle B. Brothers et al.

Summary: The field of human genetics has a complex history with racist ideologies, with systemic racism still ingrained in its institutions. Efforts are needed to address racism in scientific publishing in genetics and genomics, including training editors and reviewers on antiracist principles and implementing policies to address unique needs of the field. Beyond mere policies, resources like rubrics can help evaluate submissions in adherence to these guidelines.

Social and Structural Determinants of Health Inequities in Maternal Health

Summary: Social determinants play a crucial role in clinical care and public health, but misuse and lack of context have led to the term losing its meaning. A deeper understanding of social determinants and identifying the forces underlying their distribution is necessary.

An Exploratory Study of Epigenetic Age in Preeclamptic and Normotensive Pregnancy Reveals Differences by Self-Reported Race but Not Pregnancy Outcome

Lacey W. Heinsberg et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationships between preeclampsia, age, race, and DNA methylation age. Results showed a correlation between chronological age and DNA methylation age across pregnancy, with an impact of race on this correlation, but no association between increment age and preeclampsia status. However, pre-pregnancy BMI and race had some influence on increment age. Additional studies are needed to further explore the relationship between race and biological age.
