An ecological niche model based on a broad calcium-gradient reveals additional habitat preferences of the invasive charophyte Nitellopsis obtusa

Tyler J. Harrow-Lyle et al.

Summary: Nitellopsis obtusa, also known as Starry Stonewort, is a Eurasian charophyte that has shown a preference for lakes with high cation concentrations such as calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium in the geological transition zone of Ontario, Canada. A boosted regression tree model identified depth and cations like potassium, magnesium, and sodium as better predictors of N. obtusa presence compared to calcium. This suggests that while N. obtusa has a constrained range of calcium concentration, other environmental factors play a stronger role in its distribution in Ontario lakes.

Transformation and Simplification of Aquatic Vegetation Structure and Reoligotrophication of a Lake During the Last 40 Years

Michal Brzozowski et al.

Summary: The study on Lake Kuznickie in western Poland has shown a significant reconstruction in aquatic vegetation structure over the past 40 years, transitioning from a eutrophic lake dominated by vascular plants to a mesotrophic lake with a codominant contribution by charophytes. The water quality has improved significantly, especially benefiting the development of charophytes.
