Th17 and Treg cells function in SARS-CoV2 patients compared with healthy controls

Armin Sadeghi et al.

Summary: In COVID-19 patients, an increase in Th17 cells and decrease in Treg cells are associated with hyperinflammation and disease progression, with a higher inflammatory ratio observed in deceased patients compared to those who improved, indicating the critical role of inflammation in patient mortality.

Summary: The study showed that nanocurcumin significantly reduced the number of Th17 cells and levels of related inflammatory factors in both mild and severe COVID-19 patients, suggesting its potential as a modulatory compound for improving inflammatory conditions in patients.

Lessons learned 1 year after SARS-CoV-2 emergence leading to COVID-19 pandemic

Kelvin Kai-Wang To et al.

Summary: The lack of modern medical management and vaccines could lead to the COVID-19 pandemic reaching the levels of past deadly outbreaks like the 1894 plague and 1918-A(H1N1) influenza pandemic. The presence of multiple coronaviruses with pandemic potential in animals, coupled with environmental factors like the mixing and selling of wild mammals with poor hygiene practices in urban markets, pose a significant threat to global health. The emergence of new viruses and the challenges of mass testing, contact tracing, treatment, and potential development of vaccine-resistant virus variants highlight the importance of global preparedness in combating infectious diseases.

Current and innovative methods for the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection (Review)

Luca Falzone et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development of accurate diagnostic methods to limit the spread of infection, including rapid antigen and antibody tests, immunoenzymatic serological tests, and molecular tests based on RT-PCR. In addition to these traditional methods, new techniques such as isothermal nucleic acid amplification and CRISPR/Cas-based approaches are being researched for potential diagnostic use. This review provides guidance on the diagnostic strategies available for COVID-19 diagnosis, describing the technical characteristics of the methods and discussing sample types, testing modalities, and timing.

Back to basics in COVID-19: Antigens and antibodies-Completing the puzzle

Monica Neagu et al.

Summary: The outbreak of COVID-19 has provided a year of scientific/clinical information to be utilized in a global effort to control the infection. Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection prevalence is dependent on molecular testing availability, and further investigation is needed on the virus's viability in tested samples. Immune system plays a crucial role in fighting the viral infection, but more research is required on antibody persistence and the intense pro-inflammatory action in severe cases.
