Neuroimaging-based brain-age prediction in diverse forms of epilepsy: a signature of psychosis and beyond

Daichi Sone et al.

Summary: A recent study utilized MRI scans to estimate brain-age in patients with epilepsy, finding that all epilepsy categories except extra-temporal lobe focal epilepsy showed a significant increase in brain-predicted age difference. Temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis showed the highest brain-predicted age difference, while progressive myoclonic epilepsy had a higher brain-predicted age difference than juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. This neuroimaging-based brain-age prediction method provides novel insights into the diverse symptoms of epilepsy.

Brain aging in major depressive disorder: results from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder working group

Laura K. M. Han et al.

Summary: Major depressive disorder is associated with increased risk of brain atrophy, aging-related diseases, and mortality. This study found that MDD patients showed a higher brain-predicted age difference compared to controls, but this difference did not seem to be driven by specific clinical characteristics. Subtle patterns of age-related structural brain abnormalities in MDD were observed, highlighting the need for further longitudinal studies to assess the clinical value of these findings.

White matter microstructure across the adult lifespan: A mixed longitudinal and cross-sectional study using advanced diffusion models and brain-age prediction

Dani Beck et al.

Summary: The study reveals that advanced diffusion models provide sensitive measures of age-related microstructural changes in white matter, complementing and extending the conventional DTI contribution. Through linear mixed effects models and machine learning, the research assessed age trajectories in healthy individuals and compared the age prediction accuracy of different diffusion models, showing that advanced models performed similarly to conventional DTI.

Summary: The study suggests that different developmental trajectories in childhood may be associated with adult psychosis and depression risks. A persistently high FI level trajectory was linked to psychosis risk, while a major increase in BMI during puberty was associated with depression risk.

Correlation Constraints for Regression Models: Controlling Bias in Brain Age Prediction

Matthias S. Treder et al.

Summary: In neuroimaging, brain age delta, the difference between predicted brain age and chronological age, is proposed as a pathology marker associated with various phenotypes. Regression to estimate brain age delta often leads to bias due to the negative correlation between chronological age and brain age delta. Adding correlation constraints to the model can help control this bias, leading to optimal and unbiased predictive models.

Population-based body-brain mapping links brain morphology with anthropometrics and body composition

Tiril P. Gurholt et al.

Summary: The study found associations between anthropometric measures and body composition indicators with brain structure, suggesting both negative and positive impacts on different brain regions. Additionally, self-reported chronic diseases were also linked to brain structure. These findings provide insights into potential shared mechanisms between cardiometabolic risk factors and brain health, with implications for the development of new prevention strategies.
