Vagus nerve plays a pivotal role in CD4+T cell differentiation during CVB3-induced murine acute myocarditis

Li Yue-Chun et al.

Summary: In viral myocarditis, the vagus nerve modulates the inflammatory response by regulating CD4(+) T cell differentiation, with vagotomy resulting in an increase in Th1 and Th17 cell proportions and a decrease in Th2 and Treg cell proportions, exacerbating cardiac lesions.

Classical swine fever virus employs the PERK- and IRE1-dependent autophagy for viral replication in cultured cells.

Erpeng Zhu et al.

Summary: Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-mediated autophagy is crucial for modulation of replication and pathogenesis of mammalian viruses. Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) infection induces PERK and IRE1 pathway-dependent complete autophagy to promote viral replication and may modulate proinflammatory cytokines. Pharmacological and SiRNA interventions targeting PERK and IRE1 pathways do not affect cell viabilities, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for controlling CSF.

Reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase activity underlies skeletal muscle wasting in asthma

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: The study found reduced SERCA activity in skeletal muscles of asthmatic patients, along with alterations in the expression of regulatory proteins and cellular redox environment. These findings suggest that muscle weakness and atrophy in asthma are partly driven by SERCA dysfunction and oxidative stress.

Prediction of sarcopenia using a battery of circulating biomarkers

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: The study recruited healthy controls and patients with CHF and COPD, finding several circulating biomarkers effective in diagnosing and assessing sarcopenia. Risk scores calculated from individual biomarkers and combined into a cumulative risk score, with a median cutoff value used to divide subjects into high- and low-risk groups for sarcopenia. The battery of biomarkers can be an effective tool in the early diagnosis and assessment of sarcopenia, with significantly higher incidence of clinical sarcopenia found in the high-risk group.

Acid ceramidase improves mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in Niemann-Pick type C disease by repressing STARD1 expression and mitochondrial cholesterol accumulation

Sandra Torres et al.

Summary: NPC disease is characterized by the accumulation of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids in lysosomes, as well as an increase of mitochondrial cholesterol levels, leading to impaired mitochondrial function and GSH depletion. The study reveals a functional relationship between ACDase and STARD1 in NPC disease, and shows a cholesterol-dependent inverse relationship between the two proteins. Targeting the accumulation of cholesterol in mitochondria through manipulating ACDase and STARD1 provides a novel approach to treating NPC disease.

Quercetin hinders microglial activation to alleviate neurotoxicity via the interplay between NLRP3 inflammasome and mitophagy

Xiaojuan Han et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that Quercetin inhibits NLRP3 inflammasome activation in microglia by promoting mitophagy, thus preventing neuronal injury and providing a potential novel therapeutic strategy for neuroinflammation-related diseases.

The Novel Methylation Biomarker SCARA5 Sensitizes Cancer Cells to DNA Damage Chemotherapy Drugs in NSCLC

Qi Peng et al.

Summary: SCARA5 is downregulated in lung cancer cells and tissues with a negative correlation to promoter methylation; Ectopic expression of SCARA5 suppresses lung cancer cell proliferation by upregulating HSPA5 and increasing susceptibility to DNA-damaging chemotherapeutic drugs; These findings suggest that SCARA5 could potentially serve as a tumor marker in NSCLC.

Melatonin inhibits lipid accumulation to repress prostate cancer progression by mediating the epigenetic modification of CES1

Lijie Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that MLT has an inhibitory effect on tumor growth and can reverse resistance in CRPC models by restoring CES1 expression and reducing lipid droplet accumulation. Mechanistic investigations showed that MLT regulates CES1's epigenetic modifications to suppress PCa development.
