Patient Preferences for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance Parameters

Sean A. Woolen et al.

Summary: This study assessed patients with cirrhosis' preferences for HCC surveillance modalities, finding that patients prioritize benefits of surveillance over potential harms or inconveniences. Patients showed a preference for abbreviated MRI, MRI, or blood-based biomarkers over traditional ultrasound or ultrasound with AFP.

Use of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Surveillance in Patients With Cirrhosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: The study found that HCC surveillance is underused in clinical practice, especially among patients with alcohol-associated or NASH-related cirrhosis and those not followed in subspecialty gastroenterology clinics. Interventions such as provider education, inreach including reminder systems, and population health outreach efforts can significantly increase HCC surveillance.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths, with high incidence in adults aged 65 to 74. Screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 75 with substantial net benefit, for those aged 45 to 49 with moderate net benefit, and selective screening is advised for adults aged 76 to 85.

New clinical and pathophysiological perspectives defining the trajectory of cirrhosis

Rajiv Jalan et al.

Summary: Traditionally, complications of cirrhosis were thought to be primarily caused by circulatory dysfunction due to portal hypertension; however, recent studies have shown that systemic inflammation and organ immunopathology play crucial roles in organ dysfunction in cirrhosis, impacting various organ systems. The interaction between traditional and emerging concepts in the initiation and maintenance of organ dysfunction in cirrhosis is a topic of great interest for future research.
