Sarcopenia in pulmonary diseases is associated with elevated sarcoplasmic reticulum stress and myonuclear disorganization

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: Research suggests that in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the disruption of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) protein homeostasis (SR stress) and myonuclear disorganization are associated with sarcopenia. Additionally, COPD patients show upregulation of SR stress markers, disruption of myonuclear organization, and elevated levels of oxidative stress, all contributing to muscle weakness in advanced COPD.

Intestinal permeability marker zonulin as a predictor of sarcopenia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Asima Karim et al.

Summary: In patients with COPD, elevated plasma zonulin levels at baseline were partially reduced during pulmonary rehabilitation, showing dynamic correlations with handgrip strength and inflammatory markers. Pulmonary rehabilitation improved handgrip strength, reduced inflammation, and oxidative stress, leading to a decrease in sarcopenia incidence.

Reduced sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase activity underlies skeletal muscle wasting in asthma

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: The study found reduced SERCA activity in skeletal muscles of asthmatic patients, along with alterations in the expression of regulatory proteins and cellular redox environment. These findings suggest that muscle weakness and atrophy in asthma are partly driven by SERCA dysfunction and oxidative stress.

Prediction of sarcopenia using a battery of circulating biomarkers

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: The study recruited healthy controls and patients with CHF and COPD, finding several circulating biomarkers effective in diagnosing and assessing sarcopenia. Risk scores calculated from individual biomarkers and combined into a cumulative risk score, with a median cutoff value used to divide subjects into high- and low-risk groups for sarcopenia. The battery of biomarkers can be an effective tool in the early diagnosis and assessment of sarcopenia, with significantly higher incidence of clinical sarcopenia found in the high-risk group.

Circulating MicroRNAs as Biomarkers of Accelerated Sarcopenia in Chronic Heart Failure

Rizwan Qaisar et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a critical finding in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Circulating miRs, specifically miR-21, miR-181a, miR-133a, miR-434-3p, miR-455-3p, and miR-181a, were found to be correlated with sarcopenia indexes in healthy elderly and patients with CHF. Higher levels of miR-21 and lower levels of miR-181a, miR-133a, miR-434-3p, and miR-455-3p were observed in CHF patients compared to healthy controls. Among these miRs, miR-434-3p showed the highest sensitivity and specificity for predicting CHF.
