Transcriptomic reprogramming of the oceanic diatomSkeletonema dohrniiunder warming ocean and acidification

Satheeswaran Thangaraj et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that diatoms utilize transcriptional regulation to acclimate to ocean warming and acidification, primarily by modifying genes related to photosynthesis, electron transport, and carboxylation to save energy. This metabolic reprogramming allows diatoms to adapt to changing environmental conditions and suggests evolutionary changes in response to future climate change.

A Rise in ROS and EPS Production: New Insights into the Trichodesmium erythraeum Response to Ocean Acidification

Shijie Wu et al.

Summary: Ocean acidification caused by CO2 slows the growth and physiological activity of Trichodesmium erythraeum. This leads to a decrease in proportion of vegetative cells developing into diazocytes and an increase in reactive oxygen species accumulation. The study also shows an increase in exopolysaccharides and up-regulated key genes responsible for coping with acidified conditions.

Photoprotection and antioxidative metabolism in Ulva lactuca exposed to coastal oceanic acidification scenarios in the presence of Irgarol

Gabriela Tavares Sousa et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic changes such as ocean acidification affect coastal environments and aquatic organisms. In the presence of the herbicide Irgarol, low pH resulted in reduced photosynthetic yield in Ulva lactuca, while also inducing protective mechanisms like NPQ to adapt to low pH conditions. However, the combination of low pH and Irgarol had harmful effects on the algae, with increased membrane damage and lipid peroxidation, indicating a possible synergistic effect.

Summary: The study compared the metaproteomes of different stages of dinoflagellate cells and found that blooming cells exhibited higher activity and metabolism of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc., with dissolved organic nitrogen playing a crucial role in carbon assimilation.

Preliminary result of de novo transcriptome sequencing of the marine toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella incubated under several different stresses

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the transcriptome of Alexandrium catenella isolated from Korean coastal waters, revealing the presence of numerous toxin- and cold response-related genes, as well as the conserved dinoflagellate spliced leader (dinoSL) indicating trans-splicing mRNA processing. Additionally, the detection of second or third dinoSL relicts in some genes suggests prior recycling between the genome and mRNA, potentially contributing to genome expansion in this species.
