The radius of influence of a pumping well is crucial in hydrogeological applications and is often determined using empirical equations or the Sichardt method. To broaden the application range for varying porosities and aquifer thicknesses, a correction factor has been developed.
The radius of influence of a pumping well is an important parameter for many hydrogeological applications but is not always easy to determine. In many cases, empirical equations are thus used. In German-speaking countries, the most abundantly used method is the Sichardt method. Comparing this to an analytical model of well flow allowed identifying its optimum range of application, namely sandy to gravely aquifers with porosities around 30% and thicknesses of 15 m. In order to broaden the range of application, which is for differing porosities and aquifer thicknesses, a correction factor was developed, which can be easily calculated or read of from a nomogram. Since all empirical methods are limited, difficult tasks may require mathematically more complex methods.
