Geochronological and geochemical constraints on the petrogenesis of late Mesoproterozoic mafic and granitic rocks in the southwestern Yangtze Block

Guichun Liu et al.

Summary: Late Mesoproterozoic igneous rocks in the SW Yangtze Block, including Cuoke plagioclase amphibolites and granites, have similar ages and characteristics, suggesting they were formed in a continental rift basin. The geochemical and isotopic data indicate different sources for the amphibolites and granites and argue against the existence of a Grenvillian Orogen in the SW Yangtze Block during this time period.

The 1.14 Ga mafic intrusions in the SW Yangtze Block, South China: Records of late Mesoproterozoic intraplate magmatism

Fenglin Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents new dataset of late Mesoproterozoic diabases in the southwestern Yangtze Block, showing tholeiitic composition, negligible crustal contamination, and likely origin from partial melting of a depleted asthenosphere mantle source. The diabases rule out interaction with subduction-related materials and display characteristics typical of within-plate basalts, indicating intense continental rifting in the region during the late Mesoproterozoic. The widespread intraplate magmatism in the Yangtze Block at 1.2-1.1 Ga suggests that it may not have been involved in the Rodinia assembly at the time.
