Tracking Prototethyan assembly felsic magmatic suites in southern Yunnan (SW China): evidence for an Early Ordovician-Early Silurian arc-back-arc system

Guichun Liu et al.

Summary: The Early Paleozoic trondhjemites, gneissic granites, and alkali granites in southern Yunnan provide important insights into the tectonic evolution of the Prototethyan Ocean and regional correlations. These granitoids were emplaced between 476 and 436 Ma, with distinct characteristics indicating derivation from different source rocks during subduction processes beneath the Simao Block. Their formation is consistent with an arc-back-arc system along the northern margin of Gondwana, as supported by similar igneous rocks in southern Laos, central Vietnam, and the Malay Peninsula.

Prototethyan Accretionary Orogenesis Along the East Gondwana Periphery: New Insights From the Early Paleozoic Igneous and Sedimentary Rocks in the Sibumasu

Yuejun Wang et al.

Summary: New geochronological and geochemical data reveal a new succession of igneous and sedimentary rocks within the Sibumasu region extending from SW Yunnan to Southeast Asia, with early Paleozoic granites formed in a subduction-related setting. Detrital zircon U-Pb ages from different units in SW Yunnan and SE Asia indicate lower Paleozoic sequences, with detritus likely derived from the India-Antarctica region of East Gondwana. The late Cambrian-Silurian units were likely formed in response to the consumption of the Prototethyan Ocean in SW Yunnan and SE Asia, suggesting Sibumasu's role as part of an accretionary orogen along the northern margin of East Gondwana.

Proto-Tethys ophiolitic melange in SW Yunnan: Constraints from zircon U-Pb geochronology and geochemistry

Guichun Liu et al.

Summary: The recently identified Mayidui and Wanhe ophiolitic melanges in southwest Yunnan represent ancient oceanic crust and sediments, formed in Middle Ordovician. Geochemical analysis shows that these ophiolites were likely formed in an intra-oceanic setting with MORB-like and E-MORB-type mantle sources, providing robust constraints on the nature and timing of their formation.
