Experimental evidence shows minor contribution of nitrogen deposition to global forest carbon sequestration

Lena F. Schulte-Uebbing et al.

Summary: Human activities have significantly increased nitrogen deposition onto forests globally, affecting biomass carbon sequestration in different ways across different regions. While nitrogen deposition enhances carbon sequestration in boreal forests, it reduces it in tropical forests, with no impact in the majority of global forests. Overall, the nitrogen-induced carbon sink in aboveground woody biomass only offsets a small portion of the climate impact of N2O emissions.
