The need for an understory decision support system for temperate deciduous forest management

Haben Blondeel et al.

Summary: The study shows that forest management decision-makers in Europe are concerned about biodiversity loss, climate change, and forest regeneration, and believe that these issues will have a significant impact on future management decisions. The survey results indicate that the understory is considered an important target in forest management decisions. Overall, decision-makers prioritize biodiversity values, adaptation and mitigation to climate change, and forest regeneration in their management strategies.

Climate and functional traits jointly mediate tree water-use strategies

Victor Flo et al.

Summary: Tree water use and whole-tree canopy conductance are coordinated with water-relations traits rather than with climate, as shown in the study using a global sap flow database. Species with efficient xylem transport have higher canopy conductance but also higher sensitivity to vapor pressure deficit. The results highlight the complexity of defining a single, whole-plant resource use spectrum.
