Is a simple model based on two mixing reservoirs able to reproduce the intra-annual dynamics of DOC and NO3 stream concentrations in an agricultural headwater catchment?

L. Strohmenger et al.

Summary: This study tested a parsimonious model to reproduce the intra-annual dynamics of stream flow, DOC, and NO3- concentrations in a small agricultural catchment, achieving relatively high calibration and validation scores for stream discharge and concentrations. The results suggest that the dynamics of DOC and NO3- concentrations can be explained by hydrological transport processes and contributions from slow and fast reservoirs, with a poor representation of biogeochemical transformations.

Assessment of a portable UV-Vis spectrophotometer's performance for stream water DOC and Fe content monitoring in remote areas

Xudan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of an in-situ UV-Vis spectrophotometer with a laboratory benchtop instrument for detecting spectral absorbances and found UV-Vis sensor could explain 96% of the absorbance data from the laboratory instrument. Multiple stepwise regression (MSR) was identified as the best model for predicting both DOC and Fe levels. Accurate and unbiased models for multiple watersheds were successfully built for DOC, but not feasible for Fe predictions.

Summary: Improving our ability to detect changes in terrestrial and aquatic systems is crucial in environmental sciences, and long-term field research infrastructures like KCS play a fundamental role in revealing these changes. With a range of equipment and data generation supporting disciplinary studies, KCS attracts diverse scientists and contributes to a better understanding of boreal landscape functioning.

Peatland drainage - a missing link behind increasing TOC concentrations in waters from high latitude forest catchments?

Mika Nieminen et al.

Summary: The study found that drainage of peatlands in forested catchments contributed to increased TOC concentrations in stream waters in high latitudes, with tree stand volume correlating with the increasing trends of TOC concentrations.
