Soil microbial biomass and extracellular enzymes regulate nitrogen mineralization in a wheat-maize cropping system after three decades of fertilization in a Chinese Ferrosol

Sehrish Ali et al.

Summary: Long-term manure addition in a wheat-maize cropping system was found to increase soil organic carbon, available phosphorus, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. Soil microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon levels were highest in the treatment combining organic and inorganic fertilizers. Additionally, N-cycling and P-cycling enzyme activities showed significant differences among treatments, with the highest activities observed under the combined fertilizer treatment.

Simulation of the Present and Future Projection of Permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with Statistical and Machine Learning Models

Summary: The study uses statistical and machine learning modeling approaches to accurately simulate the changes in temperature and active layer thickness of permafrost on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results indicate that the current permafrost area on the plateau is substantial, but it is projected to significantly decrease under various climate change scenarios in the future.

Fertilization enhances mineralization of soil carbon and nitrogen pools by regulating the bacterial community and biomass

Hongliang Wu et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the addition of chemical fertilizer and organic materials can significantly increase the mineralization rate of carbon and nitrogen in soil, with the bacterial community playing a key role in this process. Specifically, Brevundimonas has a positive impact on C mineralization, while unclassified Comamonadaceae has a negative effect.

Spatial heterogeneity and environmental predictors of permafrost region soil organic carbon stocks

Umakant Mishra et al.

Summary: Large stocks of organic carbon have accumulated in the permafrost region of the Northern Hemisphere, with estimated amounts in the top 3 meters of soil. Analysis of over 2700 soil profiles revealed that soil wetness index and elevation are key topographic controllers, while surface air temperature and precipitation play significant roles in determining SOC stocks. The study's high-resolution geospatial assessment provides important insights for modeling the response of permafrost-affected soils to climate change.

Different response of alpine meadow and alpine steppe to climatic and anthropogenic disturbance on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Aihua Hao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed vegetation trends of alpine meadow and alpine steppe on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, investigating the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic disturbances. The results revealed significant influences of factors such as precipitation, solar radiation, and human footprint on vegetation greenness or browning in different time frames. Over the past decades, vegetation dynamics in alpine meadow and alpine steppe ecosystems have been shaped by a combination of complex factors.

Phosphorus rather than nitrogen regulates ecosystem carbon dynamics after permafrost thaw

Guibiao Yang et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of soil phosphorus availability in regulating plant growth, vegetation productivity, and net ecosystem productivity in a permafrost ecosystem after thaw. The results of a 3-year field observation and in-situ fertilization experiment show that phosphorus addition has a stronger effect on plant growth than nitrogen addition, indicating the crucial role of soil phosphorus availability in altering the trajectory of permafrost carbon cycle under climate warming.

Plant uptake of CO2 outpaces losses from permafrost and plant respiration on the Tibetan Plateau

Da Wei et al.

Summary: This study reveals that on the Tibetan Plateau, the fixation of CO2 by plants will outpace the loss of CO2 under a wetting-warming climate due to climate warming, leading to a plant-dominated negative feedback mechanism that mitigates the impact of climate warming on the region.
