Water column contributions to the metabolism and nutrient dynamics of mid-sized rivers

Alexander J. Reisinger et al.

Summary: Lotic and lentic ecosystems are traditionally believed to be dominated by benthic or water column processes, but mid-sized rivers act as a transition zone where both processes play a significant role. The water column in mid-sized rivers contributes more to whole river gross primary production (GPP) than to ecosystem respiration (ER) and its nutrient uptake is influenced by human land use and nutrient availability.

Stream Transport and Substrate Controls on Nitrous Oxide Yields From Hyporheic Zone Denitrification

M. J. Winnick

Summary: Rivers and streams are significant sources of nitrous oxide emissions, with denitrification efficiency emerging as the best predictor of N2O yields. Simulated results show an inverse relationship between N2O yields and denitrification efficiency, with anoxic microzones playing a key role in controlling N2O emissions.

Technical note: CO2 is not like CH4 - limits of and corrections to the headspace method to analyse pCO2 in fresh water

Matthias Koschorreck et al.

Summary: Headspace analysis of CO2 is commonly used to quantify CO2 concentration in fresh water, but systematic error may occur if the chemical equilibration of the carbonate system in sample vials is not considered. The error for typical boreal systems with low alkalinity, pH<7.5, and high pCO(2) is usually less than 5%. Improvements in method precision can be achieved by reducing headspace ratio or equilibration temperature.
