Increasing cryospheric hazards in a warming climate

Yongjian Ding et al.

Summary: The cryosphere is an important component of the global climate system and is sensitive to climate warming. Hazards from atmospheric, oceanic, and land cryosphere were summarized, revealing that these hazards may increase in the future due to climate change. The study highlights potential increases in extreme cold events, sea ice decline, glacier collapse, and snowmelt floods as notable impacts of cryospheric changes.

Can a dam type of an alpine lake be derived from lake geometry? A negative result

Adam Emmer et al.

Summary: Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are considered one of the most serious hazards in deglaciating high mountain regions worldwide, highlighting the need for GLOF hazard and risk assessment. Recent studies have attempted to assess GLOF hazard on a regional and national scale, but simplification may lead to neglect of qualitative characteristics. This study explores using quantitative characteristics and ratios to approximate lake dam types, but results show negligible differences in relative frequencies along the spectra.

Future Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) hazard of the South Lhonak Lake, Sikkim Himalaya

Ashim Sattar et al.

Summary: This study assessed the future glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) hazard of the South Lhonak Lake in the Sikkim Himalaya, considering the potential impacts of continued glacier retreat and avalanche events. The results indicate that the lake's growth may lead to overtopping of the frontal moraine, triggering GLOFs and causing significant downstream impacts.

The 2020 glacial lake outburst flood process chain at Lake Salkantaycocha (Cordillera Vilcabamba, Peru)

Oscar Vilca et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a landslide-triggered glacial lake outburst flood process that occurred in the Peruvian Andes on February 23, 2020. The initial slide evolved into a rock/ice avalanche, impacting a moraine-dammed lake and triggering a displacement wave which eroded the dam, resulting in a far-reaching flood causing fatalities downstream. The study reveals the dynamics of the event through field investigations, remotely sensed data, meteorological data, and computer simulations, contributing to the understanding of such events in changing high-mountain regions.

Contemporary glacial lakes in the Peruvian Andes

J. L. Wood et al.

Summary: Glacier recession due to climate warming has led to the growth in size and number of glacial lakes, impacting water resources and glacier mass balance, as well as posing risks of glacial lake outburst floods. By creating a comprehensive inventory of glacial lakes in Peru, this study addresses knowledge gaps and provides reproducible methods for consistent monitoring in other mountainous regions. The inventory reveals that the majority of glacial lakes are detached from glaciers, with different dam types affecting lake size variations. This inventory serves as a crucial first step in understanding glacial lakes and assessing risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods.

A massive rock and ice avalanche caused the 2021 disaster at Chamoli, Indian Himalaya

D. H. Shugar et al.

Summary: On February 7, 2021, a catastrophic mass flow hit the Ronti Gad, Rishiganga, and Dhauliganga valleys in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, India, causing extensive devastation and casualties. The collapse of rock and glacier ice led to a debris flow that transported large boulders and scoured valley walls, highlighting issues related to monitoring and sustainable development in high-mountain environments like the Himalayas.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of a 2002 rock avalanche in the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru based on detailed historical data and engineering geological slope models, emphasizing the long-term effects on slope stability. The results show that rock slope stability is influenced by discontinuous slip planes and rock bridges.

On the attribution of industrial-era glacier mass loss to anthropogenic climate change

Gerard H. Roe et al.

Summary: Small ice caps and glaciers around the world have been losing mass and retreating since the industrial era, with anthropogenic factors playing a significant role. Recent studies indicate that the combined effects of natural climate change over the past millennium and anthropogenic climate change in the industrial era have contributed to this phenomenon.

Annual 30m dataset for glacial lakes in High Mountain Asia from 2008 to 2017

Fang Chen et al.

Summary: Atmospheric warming in High Mountain Asia intensifies glacier melting and glacial lake formation, which may increase the hazards of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and impact water resources and hydroelectric-power management. Studies show that in recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the number and area of lakes in the High Mountain Asia region, especially glacial lakes.
