Constructing Shapes and Mixing Structures of Black Carbon Particles With Applications to Optical Calculations

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Black carbon aerosols strongly absorb solar radiation, affecting regional and global climate. The optical absorption of BC is still controversial due to difficulties in quantifying complex morphology. The study introduces a novel tool to construct realistic BC shape models for optical calculations, highlighting the importance of morphology and mixing structures on BC's optical properties.

Persistent residential burning-related primary organic particles during wintertime hazes in North China: insights into their aging and optical changes

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: Primary organic aerosols (POAs) are a major component of PM2.5 in winter polluted air in the North China Plain (NCP), with a limited understanding of their atmospheric aging processes. During heavily polluted periods, burning-related POA particles are thickly coated with secondary inorganic aerosols, enhancing their absorption capacity by approximately 1.39 times. Despite aging processes, the morphology and sizes of POA cores remain unchanged, indicating their inertness and long-range transport potential. The lensing effect of secondary inorganic coatings should be considered in radiative forcing models, emphasizing the importance of promoting clean energy to reduce primary emissions in rural areas.
