Fault Geometry and Slip Distribution of the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo, China, Earthquake Inferred from InSAR Measurements and Relocated Aftershocks

Kefeng He et al.

Summary: A multislip-peak sinistral strike-slip earthquake occurred in Maduo County, Qinghai on May 22, 2021, ending a nearly 70-year hiatus of major seismic activity in the central eastern Bayan Har block. This earthquake provides a rare opportunity to study the mechanical properties of the intraplate lithosphere in this region. The analysis revealed the geometry of the fault and its variation along the strike, indicating that the fault can generate large earthquakes and accommodate plate movements.

Coseismic and Early Postseismic Deformation Due to the 2021 M7.4 Maduo (China) Earthquake

Zeyu Jin et al.

Summary: The 2021 Maduo earthquake in northeast Tibet ruptured a 150 km-long left-lateral fault. Using Synthetic Aperture Radar data, a finite fault model was derived to investigate slip distribution with depth. Postseismic observations showed surface slip up to 0.1 m, partially eliminating the coseismic slip deficit in the uppermost crust.

An Integrated Approach for Mapping Three-Dimensional CoSeismic Displacement Fields from Sentinel-1 TOPS Data Based on DInSAR, POT, MAI and BOI Techniques: Application to the 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo Earthquake

Lang Xu et al.

Summary: By integrating various InSAR techniques, high-quality 3D displacements were successfully extracted with high accuracy demonstrated in a case study of the Maduo earthquake. The weighted fusion algorithm was utilized to interpolate the displacements derived from BOI and MAI, enabling accurate analysis of seismic activities.

Tectonic and Geometric Control on Fault Kinematics of the 2021 Mw7.3 Maduo (China) Earthquake Inferred From Interseismic, Coseismic, and Postseismic InSAR Observations

Dezheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study integrates interseismic and coseismic geodetic observations to quantify the interseismic strain rate, fault geometry, and coseismic slip distribution of the 2021 Maduo earthquake. Results reveal low interseismic strain rate and steeply north-dipping fault geometry, highlighting the tectonic and geometric control on fault kinematics.

Aftershock sequence relocation of the 2021 MS7.4 Maduo Earthquake, Qinghai, China

Weilai Wang et al.

Summary: The 2021 Qinghai Maduo M(S)7.4 earthquake was one of the strongest earthquakes in the Bayan Har block of the Tibetan Plateau in the past 30 years, filling in the gap of strong earthquakes in the eastern section of the northern block boundary. The aftershock sequence was relocated by a double difference algorithm within 8 days after the mainshock, revealing a total length of approximately 170 km with a bilateral rupture and a nearly vertical seismogenic fault with complex geometry.

Rupture Kinematics and Coseismic Slip Model of the 2021 Mw 7.3 Maduo (China) Earthquake: Implications for the Seismic Hazard of the Kunlun Fault

Han Chen et al.

Summary: The 21 May 2021 Maduo earthquake is the largest event that occurred on a secondary fault within the Bayanhar block in the past twenty years. The detailed kinematic study of this earthquake provides insight into the seismogenic environments of secondary faults within the block and their relationship with block-bounding faults. The study shows a highly correlated distribution of coseismic slip on the fault with measured surface displacement offsets, indicating the importance of the earthquake for updating the seismic hazards estimate for the Kunlun fault.
