International Geomagnetic Reference Field: the thirteenth generation

P. Alken et al.

Summary: The IAGA V-MOD working group adopted the thirteenth generation of the IGRF in December 2019, which includes definitive main field models for epoch 2015.0 and 2020.0, as well as predictive linear secular variations for 2020.0 to 2025.0. This update provides equations, spherical harmonic coefficients, and maps for magnetic parameters and their predicted changes from 2020.0 to 2025.0.

Wave Steepening in Ionospheric Total Electron Density due to the 21 August 2017 Total Solar Eclipse

Yang-Yi Sun et al.

Summary: This study shows that the supersonic moon shadow during a total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 can steepen the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) wave, which eventually breaks. The TEC wave behaves as a traveling ionospheric disturbance before the totality appearance, with a period of about 40 minutes and wavelength of about 1,000 km before breaking.

Statistical study of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances in low-latitude ionosphere using an automatic algorithm

Pin-Hsuan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study statistically investigates medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) at the low-latitude equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) region in the northern hemisphere. The results show that southward MSTIDs are more common during certain times in Spring and Winter, while northward MSTIDs are more frequently detected during specific times in Spring and Summer. Additionally, nighttime MSTIDs in Summer are likely connected to atmospheric gravity waves (AGWs).

Global Distribution of Nighttime MSTIDs and Its Association With E Region Irregularities Seen by CHAMP Satellite

Woo Kyoung Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigates the correlation between sporadic E (Es) and medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) at night in middle latitudes, finding that the occurrence rate of MSTIDs increases with decreasing solar activity. There is a strong correlation between the high occurrence rates of Es and MSTIDs in summer, while MSTIDs in winter hemisphere are related to magnetically conjugate MSTIDs in the summer hemisphere.

Electrified Postsunrise Ionospheric Perturbations at Millstone Hill

Shun-Rong Zhang et al.

Summary: The passage provides evidence that midlatitude postsunrise traveling ionospheric disturbances are made up of electrified waves with an eastward propagation component. The interaction between post-sunrise gravity wave wind-induced dynamo action and periodic meridional polarization electric fields effectively facilitates the zonal propagation of TIDs. By combining near-simultaneous eastward and upward observations, along with 2-dimensional total electron content maps, researchers were able to resolve the vertical and horizontal propagation of TIDs, as well as zonal ion drifts.
