Lithium and potassium isotope fractionation during silicate rock dissolution: An experimental approach

Wenshuai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the isotopic behaviors of Li and K during silicate rock dissolution under different experimental conditions. The results show varying degrees of isotopic fractionation of Li and K, with fractionation gradually diminishing as reactions progress. Ligand-driven dissolution may lead to the resorption of Li isotopes, while K isotope fractionation driven by rock dissolution stops within days.

Persistence of Uranium in Old and Cold Subpermafrost Groundwater Indicated by Linking 234U-235U-238U, Groundwater Ages, and Hydrogeochemistry

Elliott K. Skierszkan et al.

Summary: The study in a subarctic gold deposit in Yukon, Canada, reveals that the main driver of uranium mobilization in groundwater is U(VI) sorption-desorption. The high uranium concentrations in groundwater are explained by the oxidative weathering of sulfide and carbonate-mineralized structures, resulting in high-alkalinity, Ca-rich groundwater. Limited U(VI) reduction occurs beneath permafrost despite groundwater redox conditions below Fe(III) and S(VI) reduction, with groundwater ages inferred to be on the order of thousands of years.

Co-variation of silicate, carbonate and sulfide weathering drives CO2 release with erosion

Aaron Bufe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that with increasing erosion rate, weathering rates of carbonates and sulfide minerals rise while silicate weathering rates remain steady. This leads to a net CO2 emission rate in rapidly eroding terrain that is at least twice as fast as CO2 sequestration rates in slow-eroding terrain. The researchers propose that these weathering reactions are linked and influenced by factors such as sulfuric acid generation and pH buffering.

The evolution of lithium isotope signatures in fluids draining actively weathering hillslopes

Jon K. Golla et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fractionation process of lithium isotopes during silicate weathering by directly measuring the isotopic ratios in water samples. The results show changing patterns of Li isotopic signatures at different depths in the weathering profile, reflecting variations in weathering processes. The study presents a multicomponent reactive transport framework to model the progression of Li isotopes and provides insights for using stable isotopes in studying catchment-scale chemical weathering fluxes.

PRESENTATION AND APPLICATIONS OF MIXING ELEMENTS AND DISSOLVED ISOTOPES IN RIVERS (MEANDIR), A CUSTOMIZABLE MATLAB MODEL FOR MONTE CARLO INVERSION OF DISSOLVED RIVER CHEMISTRY

Preston Cosslett Kemeny et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed MEANDIR, a set of MATLAB scripts for customizable inversion of dissolved river chemistry with Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation. They applied mathematical principles to derive equations, implement critical values, construct cost functions, normalize variables, etc., and demonstrated the sensitivity of results to parameter choices through application to five previously published datasets.
