Summary: Evidence suggests that during the onset of the PETM, there was a significant disruption in the methane cycle with increased consumption of methane, leading to higher temperatures. Despite elevated temperatures, the methane cycle operated differently during transient warming events compared to gradual warming events in the early Eocene.
