Determining the style and provenance of magmatic activity during the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a)

L. M. E. Percival et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of Large Igneous Province (LIP) activity in triggering the Early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a) and emphasizes the importance of the Greater Ontong-Java Plateau (G-OJP). Globally consistent evidence of LIP activity during OAE 1a is indicated, but geographical variations in mercury trends were observed. The findings suggest that G-OJP emissions of mantle carbon were more likely to have played a major role in initiating OAE 1a than thermogenic volatiles associated with High Arctic LIP (HALIP).

Pelagic clays as archives of marine iron isotope chemistry

Ann G. Dunlea et al.

Summary: The study presents a record of changes in hydrogenous iron isotopes since the late Cretaceous derived from pelagic clays, showing a dynamic Fe cycle in the water column overlying Site U1366 over the past 95 million years. Early Fe isotope trends are interpreted as reflecting changes in hydrothermal Fe with distance from the ridge, while a transition to a dust-like source is identified after 50 Ma.

Long-term Aptian marine osmium isotopic record of Ontong Java Nui activity

Hironao Matsumoto et al.

Summary: During the early to mid-Aptian, episodic phases of organic-carbon burial in various oceanographic settings were possibly related to massive volcanic eruptions associated with the Ontong Java Nui plateau in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Osmium (Os) isotopic compositions were used as proxies to determine the timing of voluminous submarine volcanic episodes, revealing significant inputs of unradiogenic Os to the ocean through hydrothermal activity. Integration of new Os isotopic data with existing records suggests that Ontong Java Nui volcanic eruptions persisted for approximately 5 million years during this period.
