Development and use of miRNA-derived SSR markers for the study of genetic diversity, population structure, and characterization of genotypes for breeding heat tolerant wheat varieties

Sandhya Tyagi et al.

Summary: Heat stress is a significant abiotic factor that hinders wheat production worldwide, and miRNA-derived SSR markers have been successfully developed and used in genetic diversity studies in wheat. The study identified 13 miRNA-SSR markers located on 11 common wheat chromosomes, with some markers showing promise in discriminating heat-tolerant and heat-susceptible genotypes. This research suggests the potential of these markers in improving heat tolerance and other adaptive traits in wheat and other crops through marker-assisted breeding programs.

Assessment of cold tolerance in chickpea (Cicer spp.) grown under cold/freezing weather conditions of North-Western Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, India

Asma Hamid Mir et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize 366 chickpea genotypes for cold tolerance in the Western-Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Through visual screening and electrolyte leakage tests, five promising cold tolerant chickpea genotypes were identified, including wild and cultivated genotypes from different gene pools. These genotypes can be used in breeding programs to enhance cold tolerance in cultivated chickpea globally.

Discovery of miRNAs and Development of Heat-Responsive miRNA-SSR Markers for Characterization of Wheat Germplasm for Terminal Heat Tolerance Breeding

Pooja Sihag et al.

Summary: The study identified 104 heat-stress-responsive miRNAs in various crops and validated 70 miRNA-SSR markers on 20 terminal heat-tolerant and heat-susceptible wheat genotypes, with only 19 markers found to be polymorphic. The polymorphic miRNA-SSRs showed an average of 2.9 alleles per locus and were used to study genetic diversity and population structure, clustering the wheat genotypes into 3 groups. Two specific miRNA-SSR markers, miR159c and miR165b, were identified as promising diagnostic markers for distinguishing terminal heat-tolerant genotypes from susceptible ones.
