Synergistic effects between electrocatalyst and electrolyte in the electrocatalytic reduction of lignin model compounds in a stirred slurry reactor

Yanuar Philip Wijaya et al.

Summary: Valorization of biomass-derived substrates via electrocatalytic hydrogenation-hydrogenolysis is an attractive approach for selective production of organic chemicals. The electrocatalytic activity is strongly dependent on the surface coverage of adsorbed hydrogen radicals, which is a complex function of the catalytically active surface sites, electrolyte, and electrode potential. Efficient reductive upgrading of lignin model compounds can be achieved under mild conditions via electrocatalysis in the slurry reactor by exploiting synergistic effects between the catalyst and electrolyte.

Aqueous phase hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol over Pd/UiO-66

Chunhua Wang et al.

Summary: Pd/UiO-66 catalyst showed higher activity and selectivity in the furfural hydrogenation reaction, with the hydrogenation of the C-O moiety in tetrahydrofurfural being the rate-determining step. Adsorption of furfural on UiO-66 was significantly stronger than on SiO2 or gamma-Al2O3, indicating its important role in the reaction.

A Supported Ni Catalyst Produced from Ni-Al Hydrotalcite-Like Precursor for Reduction of Furfuryl Alcohol to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol by NaBH4 in Water

Dezhang Ren et al.

Summary: This study reported a supported Ni catalyst derived from Ni-Al hydrotalcite-like compounds as precursors, which was used to reduce furfuryl alcohol to THFA with NaBH4 as the reducing agent in water. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity, achieving THFA in 100% yield at 60 degrees C for 60 min, and could be recycled at least seven times without losing its activity. The reduction reaction of several furan and ketone compounds was also investigated under optimized conditions, proposing a possible mechanism for the reduction of furfuryl alcohol to THFA.

Catalytic hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol using competitive nickel catalysts supported on mesoporous clays

C. Sunyol et al.

Summary: Nickel catalysts supported on mesoporous clays were modified with magnesium oxide to enhance activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The addition of MgO neutralized acidity, leading to higher selectivity to the desired product. The best catalyst achieved total conversion and selectivity to THFA, with maintained activity after multiple reuses.
