Energy assessment of an electrically heated catalyst in a hybrid RCCI truck

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: Reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion offers advantages in reducing NOx and soot emissions, but suffers from higher HC and CO emissions than conventional diesel combustion. This study investigates the behavior of an electrically heated catalyst in a hybrid medium-duty truck operating with diesel-gasoline RCCI combustion, showing a slight increase in fuel consumption compared to non-hybrid RCCI case with a commercial oxidation catalyst. The results suggest that the RCCI hybrid concept with the electrically heated catalyst meets EUVI targets for pollutant emissions with 15% CO2 levels.

Energy management optimization for a power-split hybrid in a dual-mode RCCI-CDC engine

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that using a hybrid electrification system in light passenger vehicles can reduce energy consumption and emissions by precisely controlling engine operating conditions. Energy management control strategies like ECMS and RBC are proven to be effective in hybrid powertrain systems. The optimization function considers both emissions and fuel consumption.

High efficiency two stroke opposed piston engine for plug-in hybrid electric vehicle applications: Evaluation under homologation and real driving conditions

Jose Ramon Serrano et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of reducing vehicle CO2 emissions and costs by applying a new opposed piston 2-stroke engine in a series PHEV architecture on different driving routes in Europe. The results show that 24 kWh is the optimum battery size for both vehicle platforms, and significant emission reductions can be achieved under different driving modes and battery states of charge.

An optical investigation of thermal runway phenomenon under thermal abuse conditions

Antonio Garcia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal runaway process caused by thermal abuse using various optical techniques with a Samsung ICR 18,650 - 26 J cylindrical battery cell. The results show that venting of electrolyte and gases occurs around 200 degrees C, with a safety time of about 3 minutes between venting and fire, inversely related to the heating ramp. Fast cameras helped to understand the phenomena of venting and combustion process in detail.

Characteristics of instantaneous particle number (PN) emissions from hybrid electric vehicles under the real-world driving conditions

Yachao Wang et al.

Summary: Hybrid vehicles are optimized for better fuel efficiency but have been reported to emit higher particle emissions than conventional vehicles. High instantaneous particle number emissions are clustered in certain driving conditions and engine operating conditions. Strategies combining fuel efficiency and pollutant control are essential for cleaner hybrid technology.

Production of jet fuel by hydrorefining of Fischer-Tropsch wax over Pt/Al-TUD-1 bifunctional catalyst

Sundaramurthy Vedachalam et al.

Summary: This study focused on preparing and characterizing bifunctional platinum catalysts supported on TUD-1, with varying acidity by incorporating Al in the framework. The presence of Bronsted acid sites enhanced hydrocracking and hydroisomerization of Fischer-Tropsch wax, leading to increased production of jet fuel range hydrocarbons. Ultimately, an optimal Pt/Al-TUD-1 catalyst with a Si/Al ratio of 10 was found to be effective in producing jet fuel range hydrocarbons meeting ASTM specifications through hydrorefining at specific pressures and temperatures.
