Combustion chemistry of COS and occurrence of intersystem crossing

Zhe Zeng et al.

Summary: This study combines experiments with kinetic modelling to investigate the unconventional behavior of carbonyl sulfide (COS) oxidation. By measuring and modeling, it was found that an intersystem crossing process occurs during the reaction of COS, providing a new way to design SOx mitigation processes and handle sulfur impurities in fuels.

Boosting carbonyl sulfide catalytic hydrolysis performance over N-doped Mg-Al oxide derived from MgAl-layered double hydroxide

Zheng Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, N-doped MgAl-LDO catalyst was successfully prepared and tested for the COS hydrolysis reaction, showing improved catalytic performance by forming N species in both surface and bulk, enhancing basicity property and H2O adsorption-desorption property, and facilitating hydroxyl group formation on catalyst surface for better COS adsorption. The catalytic hydrolysis can proceed for almost 1440 min without deactivation at 70 degrees C, but further temperature increase is not beneficial due to H2S oxidation side reaction. Surface hydroxyl groups were found responsible for COS adsorption and formation of intermediate species like hydrogen thiocarbonate and bicarbonate, with the rate-determining step being IM6 -> IM7 in bicarbonate transformation.
