Effects of water temperature on glochidium viability of Unio crassus and Sinanodonta woodiana: implications for conservation, management and captive breeding

Alia Benedict et al.

Summary: The study shows an inverse relationship between water temperature and larval viability in freshwater bivalves; the higher thermal tolerance of Sinanodonta woodiana suggests competitive invasive behavior even at the larval stage; collecting and transporting glochidia from genetically important distant populations is feasible if larvae can be maintained at temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees C.
