Oxygen and nitrogen production by an ammonia-oxidizing archaeon

Beate Kraft et al.

Summary: A study shows that ammonia-oxidizing archaea in the ocean are capable of producing nitrous oxide and oxygen after oxygen depletion, indicating a reevaluation of their role in oxygen-depleted environments.

A Flux-Based Threshold for Anaerobic Activity in the Ocean

Emily J. Zakem et al.

Summary: Anaerobic microbial activity in the ocean is sustainable globally when the ratio of oxygen to organic matter supply is below that required by aerobic metabolisms, as suggested by resource ratio theory. Analysis using three-dimensional ocean datasets provides a new interpretation of existing observations, showing that a flux-based threshold for substrate supply can lead to different predictions of anaerobic activity and nitrogen loss compared to an oxygen concentration-based threshold.

Cable bacteria extend the impacts of elevated dissolved oxygen into anoxic sediments

Feifei Liu et al.

Summary: Despite limited permeability of oxygen in sediments, profound biogeochemical responses are often observed in anoxic sediments to fluctuations in dissolved oxygen concentration in overlaying water. Analysis of sediments from an urban river suffering from long-term PAHs contamination revealed significant microbial and physicochemical changes in response to artificially elevated DO, with accelerated degradation of PAHs despite minimal increase in porewater DO. The study suggests that cable bacteria play a crucial role in mediating the impacts of eDO in anaerobic sediments by altering sediment properties and reinforcing microbial community interactions.

Anaerobic endosymbiont generates energy for ciliate host by denitrification

Summary: Mitochondria are specialized organelles in eukaryotic cells that evolved from a free-living bacterial ancestor through endosymbiosis about 2 billion years ago. They have adapted to different habitats and some eukaryotes with reduced mitochondria obtain energy through fermentation.

The diversity and evolution of microbial dissimilatory phosphite oxidation

Sophia D. Ewens et al.

Summary: Phosphite is a highly favorable chemotrophic electron donor, and metagenomic sequencing revealed the diversity and metabolic characteristics of dissimilatory phosphite oxidation microorganisms (DPOMs). The global distribution of DPO metabolism in diverse anoxic environments was confirmed, and phylogenetic analyses suggested the ancient origins of DPO genes in bacteria. This study highlighted the metabolic versatility in microbial communities and uncovered the prevalence, diversity, biochemical specialization, and ancient origins of a unique metabolism essential for phosphorus cycling on Earth.

Oxygen consumption of individual cable bacteria

Stefano Scilipoti et al.

Summary: Cable bacteria may support a unique respiration mode where a small number of cells flare off electrons while others utilize energy and grow without exposure to oxygen. This behavior, possibly involving intercellular electrical signaling, allows most cells to metabolize in the absence of oxidative stress while taking advantage of aerobic respiration.

The evolution of oxygen-utilizing enzymes suggests early biosphere oxygenation

Jagoda Jablonska et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic dating of oxygen-utilizing enzymes suggests that oxygen became widely available to living organisms well before the Great Oxidation Event, around 3.1 billion years ago. This indicates a burst of emergence of oxygenases and other oxidoreductases, pointing to a wider availability of oxygen in the Earth's history.

Denitrifying bacteria respond to and shape microscale gradients within particulate matrices

Steven Smriga et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic denitrification in particulate matrices creates microenvironments for microbial growth, allowing anaerobic processes to occur even in oxygen-rich conditions. The activity of denitrification within particles is heterogeneous due to local interactions among microcolonies, impacting the spatial distribution of aerobic and anaerobic processes. Metabolic shading among Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells and microcolonies plays a key role in facilitating denitrification just microns away from well-oxygenated bulk water.

When anaerobes encounter oxygen: mechanisms of oxygen toxicity, tolerance and defence

Zheng Lu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic bacteria have the capability to tolerate significant levels of oxygen and experience episodic oxygenation in hypoxic environments. Studies have shown that these organisms possess similar defense mechanisms to aerobes, allowing them to withstand oxygen exposure. The emergent view suggests that anaerobes have evolved tactics to minimize the impact of oxygen on their metabolism or quickly restore function after oxidative stress has dissipated.

Microaerobic Lifestyle at Nanomolar O2 Concentrations Mediated by Low-Affinity Terminal Oxidases in Abundant Soil Bacteria

Daniela Trojan et al.

Summary: The study challenges the previous hypothesis that microaerobic lifestyle is solely dependent on high-affinity terminal oxidases by demonstrating that Acidobacteria utilize low-affinity terminal oxidases to respire at low-nanomolar oxygen concentrations. This energetically efficient strategy may extend to other, yet undiscovered microbial clades, and highlights the importance of considering different oxygen utilization strategies based on the presence of terminal oxidases in bacterial genomes.
