Low plasma ergothioneine levels are associated with neurodegeneration and cerebrovascular disease in dementia

Liu-Yun Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that plasma Ergothioneine (ET) concentrations were lowest in dementia patients, significantly lower compared to those with normal cognitive function or cognitive impairment. Low levels of ET were associated with disease severity and could potentially serve as a biomarker for cognitive impairment.

Ergothioneine, recent developments

Irwin K. Cheah et al.

Summary: There has been a recent surge of interest in the unique low molecular weight dietary thiol/thione, ergothioneine, which can accumulate at high levels in the body from diet and may play important physiological roles in human health and development. Blood levels of ergothioneine decline with age and onset of various diseases. Recent advances have been made in our knowledge of ergothioneine.

Whole-blood metabolomics of dementia patients reveal classes of disease-linked metabolites

Takayuki Teruya et al.

Summary: Dementia patients show significant differences in 33 metabolites in whole blood, with seven potential neurotoxins present and other compounds that may decrease brain protection. Several metabolites enriched in red blood cells decrease in dementia patients, including potent antioxidants. Metabolites normally protecting the brain in plasma are diminished in dementia, which may contribute to decreased brain function.

Dietary thiols accelerate aging of C. elegans

Ivan Gusarov et al.

Summary: Restricting dietary thiols, including GSH and NAC, can extend lifespan and increase proteotoxic stress resistance in organisms. Excessive intake of dietary antioxidants like GSH may accelerate aging, and healthy individuals are better off relying on intrinsic GSH biosynthesis to promote cellular redox balance.

Human age-declined saliva metabolic markers determined by LC-MS

Takayuki Teruya et al.

Summary: The study using saliva for metabolomics analysis found that the salivary metabolites of elderly individuals are different from those of young individuals, with age-related compounds mainly involved in the pentose-phosphate pathway, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, amino acids, and purines/pyrimidines nucleobases metabolism. In addition, metabolites related to taste, redox metabolism, and muscle activity were also identified in the saliva of elderly individuals.
