Revisiting the proteolytic processing of cell adhesion molecule L1

Ralf Kleene et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that the important functions of the cell adhesion molecule L1 in the nervous system are regulated by various proteolytic enzymes, leading to the generation of different L1 fragments. Through experiments with gene-edited mice, it was found that L1-70 and L1-135 are the predominant fragments, determined by the third FNIII domain. It was also shown that the trypsin and plasmin treatments proposed to generate L1-80 and L1-140 did not produce these fragments, but instead led to the generation of L1-70 and L1-135.
