Performance enhancement of latent thermal energy system under alternating magnetic field

Yubin Fan et al.

Summary: This study proposes an enhancement technique for PCM melting based on convection intensification, where magnetic particles driven by an alternating magnetic field induce forced convection in liquid PCM. Experimental results show a total melting time reduction of 15.8% and a 25.4% increment in overall heat transfer coefficient between the heating surface and solid-liquid interface. A universal correlation with a relative deviation of +10% is obtained for Nusselt number prediction.

The particle image velocimetry of vortical electrohydrodynamic flows of oil near a high-voltage electrode tip

Anthony E. Perri et al.

Summary: A dual-domain particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to study the electrohydrodynamic flows near a high-voltage pin electrode in an oil bath, revealing a bifurcation into toroidal eddies at high voltages. Limitations of the experimental technique include the inability to accurately measure peak velocity at high voltages due to fatty acid deposition on electrodes.

Effect of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) forces on charging of a vertical latent heat thermal storage module filled with octadecane

David Nakhla et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigated the effect of Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) forces on the charging speed of a vertical latent heat thermal storage module filled with Octadecane as the Phase Change Material (PCM). It was found that EHD forces significantly reduced the charging speed and increased the level of enhancement, with cell bifurcation being identified as the main mechanism. Furthermore, the shadowgraph system identified different heat transfer regimes, revealing that EHD forces expedited convection heat transfer by reducing the size of the convection cell.

Investigation of Time-Dependent Microscale Close Contact Melting

Mutabe Aljaghtham et al.

Summary: The close-contact melting process, resulting from direct heating of phase change material, has various applications. Increasing slip velocity without temperature slip can enhance melting rate and lead to an earlier onset of steady state, while including temperature slip can slow down the melting rate and delay reaching steady state.

Experimental investigation on the melting characteristics of n-octadecane with electric field inside macrocapsule

Zhihao Sun et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to investigate the melting characteristics of n-octadecane with electric field inside a cavity. Results show that Coulomb force plays a central role in affecting the melting heat transfer process, with the electric field hindering or accelerating the melting process depending on its strength. Further research is needed to fully understand the physical mechanisms involved.

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of natural convection melting in a cubic cavity with an internal cylindrical heat source

Xiaoying Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, natural convection melting in a cubic cavity with an internal cylindrical heat source is studied numerically using the two-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. It is found that thermal boundary conditions and the location of the inner cylinder significantly affect the melting time.
